The overwintering adults become active in spring. Eggs are laid in the topsoil about the plant. They hatch in 5-8 weeks and the larvae grow to maturity inat least 15 months. Pupation takes place during late August up to mid-septemberand the pupal stage requires about 2 weeks. The young adults remain and overwinterin their pupal cells. Fall plowing to a depth of 6 to 9 inches soon after the harvest of summer cropswill destroy a great number of pupae and young adults by breaking up their cells inthe soil. The larvae are thus turned up and exposed to the predators. Rotation ofcrops by using sesame or legumes instead of millet preceding wheat, and summerfallow of the land are found to be helpful to lessening the infestation. Control may be effective by dusting γ-BHC (at,1.5 to 2.5 kgs of 0.5% γ-BHC permow mixed with 3 parts of dry soil or sand) into the top soil by means of a tripodhand-driller between the rows just before the activity of wireworms in spring.

Field experiments have been carried out in the past two years on the control of the potato late blight by dusting with a mixture of organic mercurial and hydrated lime. Started soon after the appearance of disease loci, dusting with the mixture of 1 part Seresan (2% ethyl mercuric chloride) and 9 parts hydrated lime or the same ratio of Ceresan (2.58% phenyl mercuric acetate) and hydrated lime, 5 times at 7 days interval, gave remarkable control of disease and increase in yield. As diluent, talc powder is much inferior to the hydrated lime in field performance. Laboratory test of sporangium germination by Petri dish method have shown, however, that neither calcium ion nor hydroxyl ion influence the toxicity of mercurials. The role of lime in the control of potato late blight by the dust mixture must be sought from a different angle. LD50 of ethyl mercuric chloride, phenyl mercuric acetate and copper sulfate for the sporangia of Phytophthora infestans have been found to be 0.02, 0.058 and 0.15 ppm respectively.

DDT 是防治白翅叶蝉的良好药剂。25%DDT 乳剂1∶200和1∶300倍液的毒效均在90%以上;1∶400倍液的毒效为75—95%。2.5—5%DDT 粉剂的毒效也达90%以上。田间使用 DDT 防治白翅叶蝉的残效期约为10—12天。666单独用来防治白翅叶蝉效果甚差,但与 DDT 混合使用有增效作用,残效期与单独使用 DDT 相似;二者混用是最合理的施用方式,可以节省 DDT 用药量,减低药费,同时对多种稻虫可收综合防治之效。25%DDT 乳剂和6%可湿性666按1∶1∶400及1∶1∶600混用,其毒效相当于单用 DDT 1∶200及1∶300者;用1∶1∶500喷射效果比单用 DDT 1∶300者还略高;5% DDT 粉剂和0.5%666粉剂按1∶1混用,其毒效也和单用5% DDT 粉剂相接近。
