The metathesis of 1-hexene over the aforesaid supported "catalysts was studied. It was found that some supported systems could increase the catalytic activity as well as the selectivity of the catalyst. For WC16/ SiO2-Bu4Sn system the metathesis yield increased was six times as much as that of the original catalyst, while the side reactions (isomerization of 1-hexene to 2-hexene and 3-hexene) were depressed from 15% to 1.5% in comparison with its homogeneous equivalent.The relative amounts of surface hydroxyl group and surface adsorbed water on silica gel treated under different conditions were determined by means of IR measurement and the results were correlated with the metathesis yields. It was found that the catalytic activity increased with the increasing of the amount of surface OH group and decreased with the increasing of the amount of surface adsorbed water. This modification of catalyst properties was attributed to the formation of W-O-Si species via immobilization.
