An implementation of a low-power motion estimator dedicated to MPEG2 MP@ML is proposed.It adopts an improved multi-resolution telescopic search algorithm with low complexity.For the coarse search procedure,a new two-stage method,in which motion track search is conducted followed by adaptive telescopic search,is used instead of the unitary conventional telescopic search.In addition,the two-stage search can be early ended in accordance with the motion situation.Simulation results show that,compared with the conventional algorithm,the new algorithm reduces the computational load to only 30% while maintains same quality of the decoded pictures.To accelerate the two procedures of coarse search and motion vector refinement,a systolic array and an array of improved tree architecture are devised.Techniques such as clock gating and operand isolation are used to reduce the power consumption of the motion estimator.

A new adaptive block matching algorithm is proposed for low power implementation of motion estimators. The algorithm fully utilizes the motion and image characteristics to dynamically reduce the computational complexity. A novel two stage search strategy is used, in which a motion track search is conducted followed by a telescopic search. The two stage search can end early after the motion track search and the search window size is adaptively adjusted. In addition, the bit resolution of the pixel values adaptively varies with the image characteristics and alternatively varies with the telescopic search steps. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional algorithm, the new algorithm reduces the average computational load to only 30%~40% while providing similar decoded picture quality. A systolic array search engine is proposed for low power hardware implementation of the algorithm.

The simulation of inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) imaging of a missile target is described. The simulation of ISAR imaging of a warhead with a parabolic motion track is shown and the effects of the target's rotations (roll, pitch, yaw) on ISAR imaging are analysed. The ISAR image of a warhead with spinning motion is provided. Finally, we point out some important problems remaining to be solved in ISAR imaging of missiles.
