Earthquakes as a large-scale fracture in the earth's crust are known to be a fractal form, which is characterized by a fractal dimension. Earthquakes as a large-scale fracture in the earth's crust are known to be a fractal form, which is characterized by a fractal dimension. From a multifractal viewpoint, we analyzed the spatial-temporal distribution of micro-earthquakes in several seismic zones as well as prior to some large earthquakes (M≥7) in China. Generalized dimension, Dq. of the spatial distribution was calculated by using fixed-mass method, singularity spectrum f(α)- αwas also obtained. Our preliminary results show that the spatial distribution of earthquakes is a heterogeneous fractal structure. The value of fractal dimension D∞ is much stable than D0and Dqwith negative q. It is very useful to characterize a heterogeneous fractal pattern of seismicity. The temporal variation of D∞is also illustuated, it is found that D∞decreases before large earthquake occurrence. Its implications in understanding the heterogeneity degree of crustal stress state and in earthquake prediction are briefly discussed.

A highly efficient parameter, the inho-mogenous degree of seismicity (GL value), is put forward in this paper to describe the inhomogeneity of seismicity both in time and space prior to large earthquakes based on the fracture theory.From the temporal scanning of GL value for 43 large earthquakes (Ms≥ 7.0), authors found that there would be remarkeble anomalous changes of GL value within three years except for a few large ones according to the earthquake records (Ms≥5.0) and the authors found that the high value area (GL>1) seemed to be closely related to the later large earthquakes. It is expected that the new method proposed in this paper can play an important role in the middle-term earthquake prediction.

The observation of geomagnetic short period variation had been carried out in the region of Yantze River delta. The analysis of observation data showes that there is a unsymmetrical anomaly of geomagnetic short period variation in the region.The negative anomaly is bigger, its centre is in the area of Wuxi and Changshu.The positive anomaly is smaller,its centre is between Haian and Dafeng.The periods in which the anomaly exists are from 100 sec to 3600 sec. The maximum of the anomaly is in the point of 120 sec....

The layer rises from Dafeng toward south and vanishes somewhere about Liyang, Wuxi and Sheshan where just is the position of Liyang-Chongming fracture. There also is a high conductivity overburden which thickness is 300m in the region.
