In this paper the structures of mathematical problems to be calculated in computers are analysed. There are three kinds:1. Serial computing problems.2. Parallel computing problems.3. Serial-parallel computing problems.Among them, the serial-parallel computing processing is the main type in scientific calculation. A tentative idea of a simple serial-parallel architecture is given here, and a preliminary analysis is made. The result of the analysis shows that the serial-parallel architecture is not only necessary but also feasible.A brief introduction about the possibility of the array architecture with distributed storage is also given.In recent years, the serial-parallel computing problems have drawn more attention, especially since CRAY-1, BSP and STAR-100A were put into work, the necessity and the feasibility of the serial-parallel architecture have been further justified. The parallel computer programs to solve time-dependent two dimensional neutron transport problem were drawn up, and many test calculations were completed by using the YH-1 type electronic computer. The calculations for the six critical assemblies show that the discrepany between the calculation value and the experimental result of the critical parameter is less than the experimental error of the data. This proves that the computer programs are effective. The validity of the programs is also verified by the fact that all calculation results of the different parallel algorithm are identical. The calculations show that the efficiency of the parallel computing is roughly thirtyfold of that of the serial program when the data are the same. To enhance the efficiency of the parallel computing, we developed a combining dimension technique and an oblique diagonal sweep method in addition to using the general parallel technique.
