A model associated with operating conditions has been developed in the work for the calculations of the melt rate, specific power consumption and average slag temperature....

    Effects of high fill ratio melt on the thermal energybalance of the slag pool and the structure of the ingot in the ESR are investigated. The influence of magnetohydrodynamic stirring on heat transfer, which is decreased apparently because of high fill ratio, could be described by the empirical formulations presented in this paper. A model associated with operating conditions has been developed in the work for the calculations of the melt rate, specific power consumption and average slag temperature. The prediction of the metal pool profile, width of the mushy zone and local solidification time is also connected with technical conditions during computerization. The computed results are in good agreement with experimental measurement obtained by both the industrial-scale ESR units and the laboratory-scale installations. The range of the optimum technical condition using fill ratio has been represented according to the model prediction for the 360mm diameter G20CrNi2MoA ingot.
