There are several patterns of double cropping in wheat fields in North China,relay-intercroppingand sequential cropping are two main patterns.On the basis of field experiments and investigationsfor a five year(1973~1978)period,an effort is made to discuss the utilization of solar energy,cropeompetion and yield analysis involved in these systems.As compared with sequential cropping,relay-intercropping has been found to be more effective inthe utilization of growth season and the resources of radiation,heat,and water in June and July,the values of dry matter,LAI,LAI-D,CGR,and E increase markedly.Under this system winterwheat can be sown at an optimum time,allowing a favorable growth of wheat plant due to marginaldominance.Instead of early-maturing hybrids of corn which must be adopted in sequential cropping,later-maturing and high yielding ones can be used.Under complicated and changeable natural condi-tions,relay intercropping can make full use of favourable climatic factors for plant growth and avoidor resist the unfavourabte ones.All these advantages of relay-intercropping could result in higher andmore stable yield for the whole year.However,there occur a series of intraspecific and interspecificcompetitions and machanization of farming become more diffcult.Sequential cropping is suitable for machanization.Since the crops are cultivated at the same timethere will be no interspecific competition.A uniform plant growth leading to a optimum density willbe more easily achieved.But there are still conditions of radiation,heat,and water not fully utilizedin summer,and occasional natural disasters are not easily avoided.

The most suitable cultivar and sowing plan for relay intercropping of wheat with soybean have been studied from 1981 to 1983. It is preliminarily considered that the most suitable wheat cultivar is Yongliang 4, the soybean varieties are Tiefeng 8 and Yulin etc. The most suitable sowing plan is wide belt relay intercropping. The width of sowing for wheat is 1.2m, for soybean is 0.6m. Every physiological standard is in advantageous level in this sewing plan.The reasons to increase yield for wide belt relay intercropping were,1 ) The temperature in topsoil of wide belt relay intercropping was higher than control for a certainty. For example, the highest temperature of wide belt relay intercropping was 1.1-1.6 C higher than control, the lowest temperature was 0.5-2**** higher than control.2) The wind speed between the rows of wheat was increased by 41.6 per cent than control. The wind speed between the rows of soybean was increased by 76.2 per cent than control.3 ) According to the results of testing concentration of carbon dioxide for each treatment, the treatment of wide belt relay intercropping had higher concentration of carbon dioxide than control in any testing time.4 ) The treatment of wide belt relay intercropping had higher leaf area index in every development stages. For instance, the leaf area index of wide belt relay intercropping was 1.95 in the initiation offlower, which was as much as twice that of control at least.5) Dry matter accumulation of soybean in wide belt relay intercropping was also much faster than control. For example, the speed and quantity of dry matter accumulation of soybean was higher than control, especially in Tiefeng 8.

麦田套种大豆,是我灌区干旱少雨、无霜期短、经济利用有利的自然资源—光、水、热夺取高产的重要途径。但能否获得理想的经济效益,关键在于选择好搭配品种和确定合理的套种比例。为此,在三年的试验中,对麦豆的主要生育时期进行了干物重、叶面积指数、净光合生产率及叶绿素含量等一系列生理指标的测定,并进行田间温、光、风速和CO_2浓度的观测,结果表明,套种优于清种,而套种中又以宽行套种方式最佳,适于套种的小麦品种为永良四号,大豆有榆林大豆、铁丰八号等品种。
