(4) To clean out the compost before June in order to kill mostof the larvae and pupae of Liocola.

But different effects have been reported in different cases.During 1959-1960, we had the occasion to carry out some experiments on the effect ofDDT, BHC and Dipterex applied to the hibernating larvae of the pine caterpillar, theresults of which may be summarized as follows: According to field observations, we may divide the larval hibernation into five suc-cessive periods during the winter: 1) Active period before pre-hibernation; 2) Pre-hibernation period; 3) Hibernation period; 4) Post-hibernation period; and 5) Ac-tive period after post--hibernation. In the case of DDT, the finding in general is that there is a higher mortality at lowertemperature (between 10-20℃ mean daily temperature). But in the case of BHC andDipterex the mortality is increased at higher temperatures (when over 20℃). Theeffect is more evident in the latter case. The effects of insecticides are different at different periods of hibernating larvae. Incase of DDT the order is: Post-hibernation period > Pre-hibernation period > Hibernation period > Activeperiod before pre-hibernation > Active period after Post-hibernation ≥ Summer larvae(4-5th instars).

The Hsingtai Earthquake in March 1966 was an earthquake swarm. Five strong shocks with magnitudes of 6.0 or greater occurred in the strongly subsiding Shulu (束鹿) Graben of the Hsingtai-Hengshui (邢台-衡水) Upheaval. The results of le-velling survey show significant subsidence in the graben area before, during and after the seismic active periods. The Hsingtai Earthquake in March 1966 was an earthquake swarm. Five strong shocks with magnitudes of 6.0 or greater occurred in the strongly subsiding Shulu (束鹿) Graben of the Hsingtai-Hengshui (邢台-衡水) Upheaval. The results of le-velling survey show significant subsidence in the graben area before, during and after the seismic active periods. The results of the geodetic survey suggest a dislo-cation model of the tension-torsion fault type, mainly of right lateral horizontal offset, accompanied by movements of horizontal extension and vertical subsidence for the Hsingtai Earthquake. The repeated levellings during the intervals between the two main shocks and other strong shocks reveal that strong subsidence took place in the epicentral area of strong shocks while in area of probable future shocks conspi-cuous uplift was observed. The vertical crustal deformation before and after the Hsingtai Earthquake has probably 4 stages, characterized in general by deformation in the same direction.

1966年3月发生的邢台地震属震群型,五次大于6级的强震基本上都发生在邢衡隆起区中强烈下降的束鹿断陷内。水准测量结果说明,在地震前、地震时及地震后,断陷区都有明显的下降运动。大地测量结果证明,邢台地震是一个右旋型水平错动为主、并伴有水平方向的引张和垂直方向的下降运动,呈现出张扭性断层错动模型。在二次主震或强震的中间,水准复测结果说明:在已发生强震的震中一带强烈下沉,而可能的未来强震区有较明显的上升。邢台地震在地面垂直运动方面,地震前后大致存在四个地形变阶段,并在总体上具有同向地形变特征。
