No antibacterial substance was found in the urine of either mice or men nor was it found in the organs of mice given the extract p. o.Therapeutic effect was shown in mice infected i. p. with Staphylococcus aureus only when the extract or flavanol was given via the same route. Phagocytic action of peri-toneal macrophages was enhanced, but the number of macrophages was not increased when the extract or flavanol was given i. p. to mice. Antipyretic action was demonstrated in rabbits. Flavanol was shown to be anti-inflammatory in mice and rats. Platelet aggregation in rats induced by ADP and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro was inhibited by flavanol. The same effect on platelet aggregation induced by ADP and collagen was found when flavanol was given i. v. to rats. Flavanol given i. v. showed also expe-ctorant effect in mice as shown by the phenol red method, but the bronchial excretion was not increased.The method for elucidating the mechanism of action of traditional medical herbs with therapeutic effect in treating infective diseases is discussed, based on the pathophy-siological changes of infective diseases.

    In this experiment, the antibacterial substances were produced by inducing the diapau-sing pupae of oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi by injecting with Escherichia coli, E.coli vaccine, some chemical substances, Sephadex G-50 particles and sterile salt solution or by ultrasonic waves treatment. This case indicated that the inducers were nonspecific and extensive for pupae producing antibacterial substances.Three antibacterial substances were produced by inducing in the haemolymph of the pupae, and they have been isolated by using 15% polyacryamide gel electrophorsis. They are P5, P9D and P9E. judged from the graph of electrophorsis. A peak of lysozyme appeared on the Sephadex G-50 colum chromatograph of induced haemolymph, there were no differences between that induced by ultrasonic treatment or by E. coli injection.

The ratios of antibacterial substances induced by E. coli in B. mori pupae were different in different sexes and the period of response was also different in the different strains of B. mori.3. In addition to the common antibacterial protein bands, a product which was more basic and moved faster in electrophoresis (PAGE) than the others was induced by injection with poly I:C. Separation and identification of this new substance are now in progress.All of our results indicate that the inducible antibacterial substances in the silkworms are nonspecific for the inducers and corresponding relationship cannot be found.
