It is an efficient way to study arch dams by structural model tests, especially when the valley is unsymmetrical or is surrounded with a complicated boundary. This paper describes the course of the studies of a high, double-curvature, thin-concrete arch dam by structural model tests. The dam is located on an unsymmetrical valley with steep canyon walls. Through several stages of studies and repeated modifications the dam is presented to be five-curvature. arches in the horizontal planes in order to diminish the moments of sections of the arches. Furthermore, the damsite is revised to symmetrical shape both by excavating the left abutment and by constructing massive concrete plugs on the right abutment. The analyses of model tests have confirmed that it is a proper way to modify effectively the stress distribution on the dam to a better state-with no tensile stress and more uniform distribution of compression stresses, so as to permit very efficient structural utilization of the strength of concrete in the dam. The external water load acting on the crown cantilever are checked by the shell theory from the stresses which are measured on the model. The results are well satisfactory.

Experience shows that the yield on ricefield amply supplied with water is more in dry years than in wet years owing to more extensive utilization of sunlight. For this reason it is profitable to design the pumping plants to satisfy the irrigation requirements to the utmost extent. Since the variation of low water level in the river-netted region is often rather limited, adopting a maximum head for the pumping plant according to the lowest water level would only slightly increase the capacity and this would be well compensated in dry years. The planning of the pumping plants should fit the natural conditions such as topographical and hydrological conditions. In the river-netted region, the most favorable arrangement has been shown to be employing scattered small plants each carrying a small lot. It is usually advantageous to design plants serving for both drainage and irrigation. Sometimes, portable pumps working together with permanent plants may proved to be convenient. The necessity and possibility of the collaboration of pumping plants with other types of waterworks should always be well considered. In addition to overcoming the disaster caused by drought and flood, the electric pumping plants serve as an active device for more efficient irrigation and drainage, thus afford the possibility of lengthening the cultivating season, and adopting the most appropriate cultivating system and most suitable species of crops. The electric pumping irrigation and drainage on the Pearl River Delta presents a promising aspect for increasing the agricultural production.

Under the influence of tidal wave action, broad tidal flats are formed and prograded seaward along the coastal portion of the river mouth delta. The scouring and siltation processes of tidal flats are not only related to the utilization and protection of shore and beach, but also may have severe impacts on the water depth of navigation channels near the mouth of estuary.Based on the data obtained from numerous in situ investigations and long-term station observations, it is discovered that the scouring and siltation processes are characterized by three fundamental cyclic periods, namely, the multi-year variation in a long period, the seasonal variation in an annual cyclic period, and the storm events in a short period. Of those the storm-driven waves are most disastrous to tidal flats. Due to the asymmetry 'of the nearshore tidal current movement, suspended sediments are entrained by tidal current and deposited on the tidal flats.The peculiar diverse and complex facets of the dynamic geomorphologi-cal conditions of the South Passage of the Yangtze River estuary play an important role in the frequent exchange of water and sediment with adjacent flats. Especially under weather conditions affected by strong wind, the bar system near the mouth of navigation channels is silted up under the modification effects of tidal flats on both sides. The shoreline trend at the river mouth section is controlled by the usual wind direction and by the strong wind direction as well. As soon as the shore and beach are formed, the configuration of the shoreline may restrict and adjust the intensity of the nearshore waves, currents and sediment transport energy under various wind conditions.

受潮汐影响的河口三角洲,其滨海部分常分布有宽阔的潮滩,它的冲淤变化不仅涉及岸滩的利用和防护,而且与口门航道水深的维护密切相关.根据多次现场调查和定点观测资料,发现长江口潮滩冲淤存在着多年变化的长周期、季节性变化的年周期和暴风浪作用的短周期,其中暴风浪对岸滩的破坏性很大,而近岸潮流运动的不对称性却经常挟带泥沙上滩淤积.鉴于长江口南槽具有特殊的动力地貌条件,滩槽之间的水体和泥沙交换频繁,特别是大风天气,航道拦门沙的淤浅常受两侧边滩的影响.常风向和强风向可以控制口门地区岸线的走向,一当岸滩形成以后,海岸廓线又可以限制和调节不同风向条件下近岸波浪、水流和泥沙运动的强度.
