Sulfite (magnesium base) reed paper pulp was refined by hot alkaline, cold alkaline, acid and combination processes, so that its α-cellulose content and furfurol value would fit the chemical requirements of a rayon grade pulp. Hot alkaline and cold alkaline refinings are effective for raising α-cellulose content, but not effective for lowering furfurol value to below 5%. Sulfite (magnesium base) reed paper pulp was refined by hot alkaline, cold alkaline, acid and combination processes, so that its α-cellulose content and furfurol value would fit the chemical requirements of a rayon grade pulp. Hot alkaline and cold alkaline refinings are effective for raising α-cellulose content, but not effective for lowering furfurol value to below 5%. Acid process (60% H_2SO_4) is effective for raising α-cellulose content and lowering furfurol value. For lowering ash content, appropriate hot alkaline treatment is effective, but its effect has a limit. Ash content can be lowered only to 0.307%. This value approaches, but has not yet reached the requirement for rayon grade pulp. Appropriate combination of acid and hot alkaline refinings is most favorable for raising α-cellulose content and lowering furfurol value.The reed pulp is more resistant to refining treatments than the industrial straw pulp used by Jayme and Biefeld as well as the soda wheat straw pulp digested under mild conditions used by Jayme and Nimetullah.The refining of the reed pulp with respect to ash content and extractives by organic solvents will be continued.

1. Suan-tsao-jen (酸棗仁) is the dried kernels of the fruits of Zizyphus spinosus Hu. It is used in Chinese medicine as a sedative and recommended especially in sleeplessness, whether from weakness or from pain. 2. A detailed account of their morphological and histological characters is made together with eleven plates of illustration. 3. After a careful comparison of Suan-tsao-jen with Tsao-jen (棗仁), it is proved that Tsao-jen is the kernel of the fruit of the plant, Zizyphus jujuba Mill. The distinguished pharmacognostical characters of Suan-tsao-jen and Tsao-jen are described in three tables. 4. The important diagnostic features of Suan-tsao-jen are as follows: (1) The palisade cells of the seed coat, up to 80 μ in length, with light line, the outer and the radial walls of which are considerably thickened. The radial walls show unequal thickening, the lower portions taper off to form thin-walls. (2) Nutritive layer, consisting of collapsed parenchyma cells with brownish content. Imbedded within the outer margin of this layer will be noted a few groups of parenchyma cells. (3) The inner seed coat, consisting of 1-2 layers of rectangular cells with beaded walls. (4) Endosperma, consisting of irregular thin-walled cells, up to 35 μ in length, containing aleurone grains and oil globules. (5) Mucilaginous zone of endosperma, 20-30, μ in width. (6) The rectangular epidermis cells of cotyledone, up to 25 μ in length. containing calcium oxalate in rosette aggregates about 3μ in diameter. The mesophyll cells of the cotyledons are elongated and contain oil globules and aleulone grains.

The cultivation of ergot on rye varieties with ergot isolates from different hosts was performed both in Peking and Harbin in 1957.In general,spring rye were more susceptible than winter rye.Varieties from Changpei and Chamoshih were the most susceptible ones among spring ryes and were heavily infected with isolates from Calamagrostis epigeios,Clinelymus dahuricus,Clinelymus sibidcus,Climelymus excelsus,rye and Agropyron spp.Ergot isolates from C.epigerios,were more virulent than those isolated from other hosts.Of...

The cultivation of ergot on rye varieties with ergot isolates from different hosts was performed both in Peking and Harbin in 1957.In general,spring rye were more susceptible than winter rye.Varieties from Changpei and Chamoshih were the most susceptible ones among spring ryes and were heavily infected with isolates from Calamagrostis epigeios,Clinelymus dahuricus,Clinelymus sibidcus,Climelymus excelsus,rye and Agropyron spp.Ergot isolates from C.epigerios,were more virulent than those isolated from other hosts.Of the six isolates from C.epigeios tested,B_5 was the most virulent,causing 70% infection on different varieties of spring rye.B_1 was less virulent(causing more than 50% infection)while B_7 was least virulent(causing 5—10% infection). Injection of spore suspension into spikelets by means of hypodermic syringe resulted in higher percentage of infection than dipping method,while results with spraying method was rather poor.The percentage of infection increased with the increase of concentration of spore suspension,which was kept within the range of 600—9600 conidia per cubic millimeter. Ergot produced by strains of Claviceps microcephala on rye varieties were 34 times in weight as compared with those produced in nature on original host plants(C.epigeios).Strains B_1 and B_5 gave rise to ergots on different rye varieties containing 0.22—0.40% total alkaloids calculated as ergotoxine.The alkaloid content was much higher than that of the original rye ergots(0.06%)collected from different localities of North and Northeastern China.The figure also exceeds the required level for standard ergot(0.2% total alkaloid)as was listed in Chinese Pharmacopoeia,Strain B_5 had a higher capability for alkaloid production than B_1.Alkaloid contents of ergot also differed considerably with different rye varieties,and Chamoshih appeared to be the better variety than either Kongtzeling or Pinglu.
