    Since the mitochondral heterosis and complementation were proposedas biochemical measurments of relative yield potential for F_1 hybrid,much attention has been paid to those phenomena among plant breeders.The results published thus far, however, were contradictory. In orderto examine the validity of mitochondrial heterosis and complementation,experiments were carried out with 56 hybrid - parent combinations includingwheat, maize and sorgh??, Mitochondria were isolated from coleoptilcof 2 to 3 - days old seedings grown at 27℃ in dark. Mitochondrialoxidative activity was measured in a Warburg respirometer at 28℃. Theresults obtained from wheats, whose E_1 hybrids were known to Theexhibition of heterosis or nonheterosis, indicated that the mitochond-rial complementation does not correspond usually to the field performanceof the hybrids. The mitochondrial activities of both heterotic maizehybrids and the 1: 1 mixture of their parental material exhibit definitesuperiority over their inbrid parents when tested alone. It is alsonoted that double - crossed maize hybrids exhibit neither mitochondrialheterosis nor complementation. The results obtained with mitochondriafrom heterotic sorghum hybrids and their parental mixture are similarto those of the maize. These observations show that the phenomena ofmitochondrial heterosis and complementation seem to occur in manyheterotic hybrids, but not in all. In order to ascertain their practicalvalue in breeding programme, it is necessary to establish the conceptthat mitochondrial heterosis and complementation are in good accordancewith the yield of the hybrids.

The following results are obtained from this work. First,there is a good positive correlation between the degree of mitochondrial heterosis and the heterosis of grain yield(correlation coefficient r=0,73).Second, the mitochondrial activity was closely related to grain yield of maize(r=0,83). Third,there is no significant positive correlation between mitochondrial complementation and grain heterossis in our experiment(r=0,50).Fourth,a significantcorrelation betwen mitochondrial heterosis and complementation is also not observed (r= 0,33).The above data indicate that mitochondial heterosis and complementation seem to be of different physiological phenomena.It is suggested that the mitochondrial heterosis may serve as a quantitative heterosis. But we cannot, at present, ascertain that predictors of mitochondrial heterosis is a reliable tool in breeding hybrid cereals.

    我们前一工作,曾观察到某些优势玉米杂种似乎存在着线粒体杂种优势和线粒体互补现象为了进一步验证线粒体杂种优势或线粒体互补效应与杂种田间产量是否呈显著正相关,是否对亲本组合的选配上有应用价植。我们对七套具有不同杂种优势的玉米杂交组合进行了测定。由测定结果来看:线粒体杂种优势与田间籽粒杂种优势之间,基本达到显著正相关水平(r=0.73)。植得注意的是,玉米自交系和杂种的线粒体氧化活性与它们的籽粒产量之间,表显现出显著的正相关(r=0.83)。但是,线粒体互补效应与籽粒产量杂种优势之间,无显著正相关(r=0.50);线粒体杂种优势和线粒体互补效应之间,也不存在显著正相关(r=0.33)。看来,线粒体杂种优势和线粒体互补作用,可能是两种不同的生理现象。我们初步认为:线粒体杂种优势可以考虑作为一种鉴别杂种优势的生理指标;但目前还不能确认线粒体互补作用是一种预测杂种产量水平的可靠方法。
