Experimental results confirm that the packing density of ZrO2, TiO2 and SiO2 with ion bombardment, measured by a quartz crystal microbalance, is increased to over 0.9. Based on the technique of moisture adsorption the measured drift of the peak transmission wavelength of interference filters consisted of these materials is reduced by a factor of 3. It shows that ion assisted technique might be employed to produce films of superior optical and mechanical performances.

For short wavepass filters the shift of the edge wavelength is about 200 A, while for multi-cavity broad band pass filters with the spacers of MgF_2 the shift around 250A.These experimental resulfs are well consistent with that of theoretical simulationinvolved the concept of the packing density of thin films, carried out in a PC--1500 computer.

Films of ZnS and MgP2 have been prepared by Ar-ion assisted deposition. The packing density of the MgF2 films has been increased from-0.8 without ion-bombardment to 0.9-0.95 with bombardment as determined by:the wavelength-shift measurement after moisture adsorption of filter. Experiment found thatabsorption and scattering losses increased with the high energy ion (>lkeV) bombardment and the low energy ion(<0.7 keV) bombardment is shown to increase significantly the abrasion resistance and adherence of...

Films of ZnS and MgP2 have been prepared by Ar-ion assisted deposition. Experiment found thatabsorption and scattering losses increased with the high energy ion (>lkeV) bombardment and the low energy ion(<0.7 keV) bombardment is shown to increase significantly the abrasion resistance and adherence of films without significantly degrading their optical performance. This technique is of important for application in praparing durable coatings on temperature sensitive substrates.
