Intercritically heat treated and conventionally heat treated 35CrMo Steels were used to investigate the possibility in improving its cryogenic strength and toughness. Smooth and notch tensile tests and series impact tests were carried out at different temperatures (from room temperature to-196℃). The experimental results have shown that the austenite grain of 35CrMo steel can be considerably fined (at grain-size No. 12) after intercritical heat treatment and thus the notch sensitivity was reduced. The remarkable increasing in impact toughness around ductile-brittle transition temperature was also observed in intercritioally heat treated 35CrMo steel. The ductile-brittle transition temperature was reduced about 20℃ due to the intercritical heat treatment. However, the ductility of 35CrMo steel was slightly reduced by intercritical heat treatment, although cryogenic smooth tensile strength was improved. For intercritically heat treated specimens the basic characteristics of cryogenic tensile fracture show that cracking is initiated at the boundaries between ferrite and carbide and then propagated mainly in transcrystalline. At liquid nitrogen temperature no cleavage fracture can be found, only mixed fracture of quasi-cleavage plus a few dimples are observed. The proper process of intercritical heat treatment for 35CrMo steel is as follows: after quenching at conventional temperature and the re-quenching at 820℃ (approximatly 13% insolutle ferrite) and tempering at 550℃.
