The grain boundary peak in molybdenum was measured by a torsion pendenlum, when the frequency of vibration is 1 cps, the peak occurs around 1020℃. This G. B. peak is reduced by oxygen or carbon additions, but an "alloy grain boundary peak" appears at the lower temperatures on the same damping curve. The grain boundary peak in molybdenum was measured by a torsion pendenlum, when the frequency of vibration is 1 cps, the peak occurs around 1020℃. This G. B. peak is reduced by oxygen or carbon additions, but an "alloy grain boundary peak" appears at the lower temperatures on the same damping curve. Using frequency of 1 cps, "Oxygen peak" occurs around 890℃; and "carbon peak" occurs around 925℃. Since no peak is evident on the damping vs temperature curve of molybdenum single crystals, it may be concluded that these peaks are all associated with the stress relaxation across grain boundaries. If some carbon is also present in the sample containing oxygen, the other two "alloy grain boundary peaks" appear around 960℃ and 985℃. The activation energys of all the peaks were determined. The higher is the peak temperature, the larger is the value of activation energy, i.e. the activation energy of "oxygen peak" is the smallest one (80 kcal/mol); that of "carbon peak" is somewhat larger (98 kcal/mol); that of "pure grain boundary peak" is the largest (119 kcal/mol); and the activation energies of the other two "interaction peaks" are somewhat less than that of "pure grain boundary peak".

It is shown that the best stirring condition is a melt with 40-60% solid phase. A method for accurate controlling this apt proportion of solid phase in the melt is proposed. Experiments shown that this simple timecon- -trolling method is workable, Stirring is done under vacuum condition. The optimum stirring speed is 1800 r,p.m,for 10 min. In the second part of this paper, the production of Al-Si 8%-graphite 6% composite is discussed. Tests shown that a composite with an even distribu- tion of graphite can be obtained With a graphite content up to 20% by wt. Spectral pure graphite powder is used, 70% of the grains are within the range of 0.1-0.3mm , The powder is evenly spread over the surface of the melt. The bearing quality of this composite material is tested with a composite sleeve running against a steel shaft with a load of 6 kg/cm2, at a linear speed of 1.2m/sec for 14 hrs under lubricating condition. Wear out for the composite is 0.020g, which is about 20 times better than that of Al-Si 8% alloy(0.391g). The wearability and coefficient friction of this Al-graphite composite is 0. 020g and 0.009 respectively, which is comparable with ZQSn 6-6-3 bronze (0. 021, 0,009). Tests also shown that the Al-graphite composite has very good damping capacity, which is comparable with gray cast iron. Owing to its lightness, its damping rate/density ratio is many times higher than that of gray cast iron.

The "operation effects" resulted from various adhesives were quantitatively evaluated during measuring the internal friction and modulus defect of low damping specimens by Marx-method. It was observed that the background of internal friction for some weak adhesives, e. g., phenyl salicylate, water glass mixture, etc. seems to be neither negligible nor constant value which is dependent on such factors as their temperature, thermal stress, time, dryness and strain amplitude, similar to that of dislocation...

It was observed that the background of internal friction for some weak adhesives, e. g., phenyl salicylate, water glass mixture, etc. seems to be neither negligible nor constant value which is dependent on such factors as their temperature, thermal stress, time, dryness and strain amplitude, similar to that of dislocation damping. Two resonant peaks were observed for high temperature thermospalled adhesives with cracks. The internal friction measured at an anomalous resonant peak with slightly higher frequency decreases with increasing of the strain amplitude or the exciting time at high amplitude and increases with aging under lower amplitude. Peaking effects were found on the plot of internal friction vs strain amplitude or time when the resonant frequency of anomalous peak closed to the normal one. The hysteresis loops were observed on the plots of resonant amplitude vs frequencies. In certain combination of non-linear resonant hysteresis loop with aging effect, the almost periodic jumps of the repeatable amplitude of specimens may be presented. The aforementioned phenomena had vanished by using a high temperature and high strength adhesive, but the cracking of quartz dumb bar and plastic flow of specimen undergone by the thermal stress. An approach to its applicability and improvement has also been attempted.
