The study on the tropical air-sea interaction centered at El Nino/Southern Oscillation phenomenon is one of the most developing research areas in recent geoscience that has not only the important scientific significance, but also the prospective practical application to climate prediction.This review first argues the characteristics of tropical air-sea interaction and its role in the interannual climate variability and then summarizes the four main periods of research development in this area and the main progress in recent 10 years. Finally, some major scientific problems which need to be emphasized in the future are put forward.

A 1 835-year tree ring chronology from the Qilian juniper (Sabina Przewalskii) is used to analyze the climate variability. A 1 835-year tree ring chronology from the Qilian juniper (Sabina Przewalskii) is used to analyze the climate variability. Tree ring data from be cores were collected at the Ela mountains, ranging from 3 100~3700m level in the Dulan region, Qinghai province in the September, 1993. The studied arm is locate at the northeast of Tibetan Plateau,and between Kunlun and Qnghai-Nanshan mountains, with average elevation of above 3 500m The average annual precipitation of this region is 180 ~ 200mm and the annual mean temperature is 0.3℃, thus it is a typical dry, high sea level and cold area.The the ring wbes were cross-dated and measured using standard techniques. The tree ring chronology was compared diredtly to the monthly temperature and precipitation data from the closest Dulan meteorological observatory near the sampling sites. The correlation coefficient of the the ring chronology to mean temperatUre of September ~ November is 0.43, and that of 0.41 and 0.51 to May and June precipitation respectively.Therefore the the ring chronology can be used to infer the variations of cold and warm in the area. It was shown that there were 11 warm spells and 10 cold spells since 1 835 year, of which 819 ~ 1086 A. D. years is the longest warm period, lasting 268 years, and 623 ~ 818 A.D. years is the longest cold period, lasting 196 years. The durations of the warm period over 100 years have only 2 times, and the durations of the cold period over 100 years have 5 times. The results indicate that cold period was dominant in this arm in the past 1 835 years. The warm period of 819 ~ 1086 A. D. years (correspond with The Medieval Warm Period) was a touchline of climate variation in the area. Before the warm period,the conversion from cold to warm was rapid, but from cold to warm was sluggish.Furthermore, the warming trend started sinces The little Ice Age ended, which is keeping warm to the present.

Analyses of ice cores drilled through Greenland and Antarcitica ice sheets and high glaciers have produced remarkable advances in our understanding of the evolution of Earths climate. The past a few years have seen a revolution in our thinking on climate variability and tropic climate sensitivity, because of the signs of fast climate oscillations and cooling ice age tropics displeayed in the ice cores. One of the principal progress made by GRIP and GISP2 ice cores has been the demonstration that the last glacial period was punctuated by a series of abrupt warm interstadials during which temperature increased by about 5℃ ̄8℃ for a few hundred years. Another sigificant new finding has been the document that the Eemian interglacial was interrupted by a series of severe cold periods, which began extremely rapidly and lasted from decades to centuries. Thirdly, a high glacier ice core opens a view of the ice age tropics. Two ice cores from Andes found that the tropics did share in the cooling as much as 8℃ to 12℃ lower than today during the late glacial stage. And the last, analysis of borehole temperature at GISP2 reveals that polar amplification of climate change is a central characteristic of Earths climate. With these new discoveries, the widely accepted concepts of a noisy glacial climate and a quiet interglacial climate as well as thermostat tropics came under challenge. And they result in the questions about the consequences of future global warming. Will the greenhouse effect end the recent climate stability and bring rapid climate change to our doorstep?
