The author holds that the method for preventing roof fall accidents is based on a summary of reasons and conditions of commonly found roof fall accidents, an understanding of the roof and floor conditions and the rule of their movement. Counter-measures can be taken to control roof scientifically. The concrete methods for roof control are: to understand laws of roof movement on the basis of mine pressure observations, and to predict the scope, direction, and time of roof movement; to select optimal type of support and supporting mode at the workings so as to prevent the roof from sliding downward when the workings are at high gradient; to popularize single hydraulic props; when conditions permit, powered supports are the best; the position of face start-line in the lower slice of a thick coal seam should avoid soft and weak place where fallen rocks not in contact with the nether roof.
