This paper reports the findings of an emperical study. With English-major students at different levels as subjects, and through factor analysis, the study shows that the structure of English competence is closely related to the level of proficiency. The higher the level of proficiency, the fewer factors that can be extracted. Implications of the findings are also discussed.

本文是一篇关于中国学生英语能力结构研究的实验报告。实验对象为大学一、二、三年级英语专业学生。本实验采用因素分析(factor analysis)手段,重点探讨了不同水平学生英语能力的构成情况以及能力结构与英语水平的关系。实验结果表明,英语能力是一个多元素结构,一般由一个总体因素和一至二个其它因素构成。另外,英语能力是一个不断变化的动态结构,这种变化与英语水平有密切的关系。随着英语水平的提高,构成英语能力的因素呈现出较强的总体化倾向。

According to the actual English teaching state of graduate students in P. E. institutes at present ,and guided by the Teaching Programme of Graduate Students (Non English Major), the author presents several issues which should be paid attention to in English teaching of graduate students.
