    A 'new stream' has emerged from Chinese compositions. The main force of itis a group of young composers who are in the period of maturity. During the pastfew years, they have showed great telent in composing, and began to attract wideattertion, home and abroad. The 'new stream' has three distinctive feetures. Firstly, it has partly brokenwith the one-sided notion of the essence and social function of music. For a longtime in the past, the viewpoint of heteronomy has occupied a dominant position inChinese...

    A 'new stream' has emerged from Chinese compositions. The main force of itis a group of young composers who are in the period of maturity. During the pastfew years, they have showed great telent in composing, and began to attract wideattertion, home and abroad. The 'new stream' has three distinctive feetures. Firstly, it has partly brokenwith the one-sided notion of the essence and social function of music. For a longtime in the past, the viewpoint of heteronomy has occupied a dominant position inChinese composing. Some works of the 'new stream' show young composers areseeking for exploitation and control of space and lime of sound. This attitude ofcomposing is, in fact, derived from autonomy. The adoption of some principles ofautonomy, however, does not mean that the composers totally reject heteronomy.They only regard it as a good complement. And this may eventually point to anew conception of music for Chinese composers. The 'new stream' also indicates that composers have begun to emphasize themultilayer and many-sided fuctions of music, not only the instructive aspect of it. Secondly, in the work of the 'new stream', the composers display thier aotiveexploitation of combining modern compositional technique in the west with Chinesenational spirits: a variety of tone-rows; distinctive style of melody; new logic ofharmonic structure; the expanssion of tonality; the breakthrough of conventionalmusical forms. Thirdly, the 'new stream' composers exploite the national spirits in subjectmatter, language and artistic conception, on a higher level of aesthetic consciou-sness. For the sake of a healthy development of the 'new stream', in the opinion ofthe writer, composers should get a better grasp of the complex nature of musicallanguage, try to avoid loosly organized structure of thier music and pay more atter-tion to current sublet matter, in the meantime, the public, especially the musiccritic circles should show more concern for the 'new stream' composers.

Themusical composition is a creation under a structural force, and its directional andpurposeful movement is a process whose locus could be mathematically described inabstract as a vector and further transformed into a limited series with a finitenumber of terms and with the value...

Themusical composition is a creation under a structural force, and its directional andpurposeful movement is a process whose locus could be mathematically described inabstract as a vector and further transformed into a limited series with a finitenumber of terms and with the value of each term defined. The properties of nu-mbers found in music must exist and can only exist as a certain sector, or closedinterval, within the infinite collection of number series that is an abstract descri-ption of all elements of the world.On this mathematical property of music dependsthe distinctness of music from everything else and its harmoniousness and orderliness. As the range and scope of the definition of the language of music increasinglyexpands, and the collective body of its means of expression grows from day to day,conventional or current systems of composition are no longer able to keep up withand encompass or cohere the steadily growing aggregate of new techniques.In orderto seek new structural forces, the present paper proposes, on the basis of practiceand reflection, tentative conceptions of a "Theory of the Numerical Control of Mu-sic". Pursuant to the determination of the theme of expression of a musical compo-sition, the composer should, under the guidance of strict mathematical logic andon the basis of a specific series structure, and basing himself on concrete numeri-cal relationships, correlate, define and deliminate the terms of the composition,including its every layer, link and aspect,from its structural design to the proces-sing of materials in every detail, so as to achieve an exactitude, harmoniousnessand orderliness that corresponds,in form and structure, to the mathematical logic,series configuration and numerical relationships involved. As a method of organization, Numerical Control of Music applies to materials of all musical styles, and may give rise to ever new and different styles of musi-cal compositions. An important link in the process is the selective correlation ofthe elements of numerical control (the series structure) with the musical mat-terials, based on adequate understanding and clear foresight. The contradictionsand differences between thinking by logic and thinking in images shall be reco-nciled and unity will possibly be achieved on this basis.
