This report gives a general discussion of the lateral-directional dynamic flying qualities of military airplanes, based mainly on the Military Flying Qualities Specification of Piloted aircraft, MIL-F-8785 B issued in 1969, to provide the necessary background for drafting the flying quality specification of our own country.The lateral-directional mode characteristics is discussed first, followed by a discussion on lateral-directional dynamic response characteristics, the order being the same as that adopted by MIL-F-8785 B.In the discussion about mode characteristics, comparison is made between 8785 B and those specifications issued before 8785 B, such as 8785, AP970 and OTT, and explanation of the background for- the adoption of each criterion is given wherever possible.In the discussion about response characteristics, an analysis of the difference between 8785 B and "Proposed Revision to MIL-F-8785 B" (ref 5) is given.

With the aid of references [2] and [3] the improvement in riding qualities of the airfrarne/SAS system due to the selected coefficients were evaluated. The dynamic characteristics of the airframe/SAS system were also analyzed.The results demonstrate that the riding qualities are desirable when the control anticipative parameter of the airframe/SAS, system approaches to 9.81/lx, and the operating range of the SAS is limited to the elevator displacement less than 10% of the max.displacement.It is necessary to take into account the lift due to the elevator deflection in the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the airframe/SAS system, if the tail area is large enough in comparison with the wing area such as 0.2.

A preliminary approach to the concepts of aeronautic maintenance psychology is made and the psychological qualities which should be commonly possessed by aeronautical maintenance personnel are expounded. On the basis of the analysis of the structure of man-machine system, this paper discusses the psychological characteristics of maintenance and detection personnel in view of the three detection modes commonly used today.In direct detection, the swiftness of detection, the keenness of sensing failure, the complex of maintenance ambience and the entirety of fault processing demand special ability for quality judgement, skillful response of operation, nimble and careful observation,steady and self-controlled mood and flexibility to deal with emergence, In instrument detection, the diversification of detected information, the deep going nature of detection requirement and the thoroughness of removing failure demand good distribution of attention, accurate perception, rigorous thought and resolute judgement. In intelligent machine detection, the electron brain and equipment constitute a closed loop, where the interaction between man and machine is deeper, the detection efficiency is higher, so a high degree of sense of responsibility, more resourceful systematic sense and adaptibility to high rhythm are demanded.Finally, the main concepts of psychological training for different detection modes is advanced.
