For analyzing the linear structural system with multi-degree of freedom, the complex mode theory has to be used if the viscous damping is not proportional. This paper deals with the characteristics of the complex mode transfer function and frequency response function according to the complex mode theory. The modal natural frequency and the modal damping ratio are defined and the relationship between the complex modal parameters and frequency response function is derived. On this basis, the mobility circle fitting method for identifying the complex modal parameters from frequency response data is discussed. Two iterative methods, i. e. the stepwise iterative method and global iterative method, for identifying the complex modal parameters from the data of acceleration frequency response are also presented in order to improve the accuracy of modal identification. Furthermore, the on-line modal identification techniques using the mobility circle fitting method are also presented, the modal test of the rigid solar panels of a satellite is taken as an example in this paper. Using these two methods, the results of modal identification are shown and compared.
