Issues concerning Semantics and Pragmatics are heatedly discussed by modern linguists. This paper attempts to make a study into bilingual comparison of Semantics and Pragmatics and their application in English-Chinese translation where the two languages are involved, from the angle of contrastive linguistics, i.e. the lexical and cultural difference between the meanings of the words in the saidl anguages, resulting from their different semantic field, register, historical background, situational context...

In fact, terms for purple (zi,紫) and pink (hong,红,now meaning red)in ancient Chinese occured much earlier than terms for blue (lan,蓝) and brown (he,褐). Similarly, some common features in different colour systems may be ascribed toparallel environmental and cultural constraints.

1969年,美国的两位语言学家伯林(Brent Berlin)和凯(Paul Kay)提出基本颜色词(basic color terms)理论。该理论主张,人类语言具有十一个基本颜色范畴,各种具体语言中表示这些颜色范畴的基本颜色词虽然数量可以不等,但都遵循一种可分为七个阶段的普遍发生顺序。1978年,凯和麦克丹尼尔(Chad K.McDaniel)对该理论作了补充和修正。本文拟对基本颜色词理论作一概评,指出该理论与汉语基本颜色词的演变事实不相符合之处,并从文化角度对颜色词产生和发展的某些事实作出解释。

This Paper elaborates H.P.Grice's“Cooperation Principle”cast in the light ofan English-Chinese contrast and probes into the East-West difference in adoptingthe Cooperation Principle or G.Leech's Politeness Principle in the course ofcommunication by the two languages respectively.The author winds up his paperwith brief argument on the necessity of cultural review.

本文以英汉对比方式,详介了格赖斯的“合作原则”,探讨了两种语言内交际过程中东西方在“合作原则”或利奇的“礼貌原则”选择问题上的文化差异,最后简要论证了进行文化反思的必要性.
