Most of the formulas for the calculation of radial stress in mandrels for coilers are derived from Lame equation, based on the assumption that the mandrel and coil are cylinders of thick wall, and that in both the elastic deformations are the same. Owing to the development of strip mills, the improvement of quartoprism mandrels, and the application of automatic collapse control, these formulas have become unsuitable.

This paper describes an eddy current test method for determining the depth of crack and slits on metal surface. Its measuring principle may be explained as follows: the frequency variation of the detecting oscillator takes place due to coil inductance variation, the magnitude of which depends on the crack depth, when there is a crack within such a surface part, the eddy current line is forced to bypass the crack on a longer way. This paper describes an eddy current test method for determining the depth of crack and slits on metal surface. Its measuring principle may be explained as follows: the frequency variation of the detecting oscillator takes place due to coil inductance variation, the magnitude of which depends on the crack depth, when there is a crack within such a surface part, the eddy current line is forced to bypass the crack on a longer way. In this case, due to skin effect, the coil inductance variation takes place and causes a small frequency variation, which will be detected, thus the depth of crack may be measured through the signal transform in terms of the amount of voltage which increases with the depth of crack. This test method can be used to detect the micro-crack on the surface of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, such as austenite stainless steel and compound metal, iron and cast iron, steel and cast steel, copper and aluminum, etc. The measurement accuracy of this instrument is ±10μm for quenching crack of 50-1, 000μm in depth.

本文叙述了采用涡流变频法原理的测量方法来确定金属表面裂纹深度。本测量原理是基于涡流线沿着裂纹深度旁路通过的,随着检测振荡器的线圈阻抗对应于不同裂纹深度而变,致使频率发生变化,经过适当的信号处理即可测出相应的裂纹深度。 本仪器专门用于检测金属表面微细的浅裂纹,特别适用于各类不同材质的金属如奥氏体和粗晶粒的金属。铸铁、铸钢及其合金,以及有色金属铜、铝等。本仪器的测量精度在裂纹深度为50~1000μm时,精度为士10μm。
