Coastal ports: the modern transportation pivot for the connection between the region south of the Five Ridges and the interior of China during the first half of the 20th century
This paper mainly studies the foreign trade of Chaozhou in the Ming and Qing dynasty ,using the study methods of many other fields ,to make an detailed analysis on the ports ,trade structure ,as well as the social problems caused by the foreign trade .
As to the ports ,this paper makes further study on the Nan'ao port ,Zhangshu port ,and Shantou port ,and at the same time lays emphasis on other ports that were ignored before ,such as Zhelin port ,Anbu port ,the East port ,the West port ,the Chaoyang ports ,Jinghai port ,Shenquan port ,and other temporary ones, attempting to present a full view of the foreign trade ports of that period .
This paper, with a synthesized research, studied the city in the evolution of ports in East and South-east Asia. The paper also discusses the unique influence upon the start-up of Chinese modern cities exerted by Macao's transformation ——from a traditional commercial port to a modern city.
