Various parameters involved in the stability of rock mass are so complicated and confused that most of them are difficult to evaluate and so it is impossible to take them into consideration in a marked degree.However,the application of engineering stability classification based only on the final condition of rock masses enables us to solve the hard problem in engineering practice without those troubles.After giving a review of several typical classification practices,this paper puts forward a new suggestion in such a way that the convertible equivalent strength of rock mass L is considered as a comprehensive index to classify the engineering stabilities of rock masses.The index or criterion L is defined as a product of the point-load compressive strength σc(as determined by in-situ test) by a rock/rock mass conversion factor Q.It means a compound mechanical strength of both rocks and its joints.As a prerequisite for better classification,the engineering geology should be taken into account to classify rock mass structures of every sort and kind.In this way,according to the rock discontinuity,structural element geometry relative to the scale of excavation engineering and the different types of mechanic media in which the rock masses are formed etc,the rock mass structures are divided into six levels: massive,laminated,block-jointed type A and B,fissured and loosened.The decisive evaluation for rock mass stability may then be ascertained on the bases of the classification of rock mass structure and the comprehensive index L as above.Five classes for evaluating the engineering stability of rock mass are named as followsistable,substable,intermediate stable,bad stable and unstable.Table 3 gives them in detail with the criterion L.The point-load test to measure σc is also briefly described.It is shown that the point-load method can be used not only for rock strength but also for the joints.There is evidence in practice that the new classification method is simple and convenient and,above all,well represents the stabilities in various kinds of mining works.
