Cladistic methodology, as developed in Europe in the 1960s and popularized in the United States in the 1970-80s, was first introduced by a few vertebrate paleontologists into the Chinese systematic community in the early 1980s. Despite the efforts of several scholars and overseas students to provide a platform for discussion and to translate important papers and books, interests in the phylogenetic systematics remain limited and systematic studies are primarily focused on descriptions of new forms. Cladistic methodology, as developed in Europe in the 1960s and popularized in the United States in the 1970-80s, was first introduced by a few vertebrate paleontologists into the Chinese systematic community in the early 1980s. Despite the efforts of several scholars and overseas students to provide a platform for discussion and to translate important papers and books, interests in the phylogenetic systematics remain limited and systematic studies are primarily focused on descriptions of new forms. However, a growing number of practitioners of phylogenetic systematics, especially the younger generation, are beginning to apply the fundamental tenets of cladistics to various groups of organisms. The present summary about recent trends in the principle and practice of cladistics is therefore part of a continuing discussion to disseminate recent issues, to address serious concerns, and to encourage active participation.Recent explosive growth of phylogenetic data, particularly that of DNA sequence, and the increasing concern of the proper methods to analyze the data have greatly invigorated phylogenetic researches. As neontologists, especially molecular biologists, become increasingly involved with phylogenetic questions, some active discussions begin to question the role fossils play in the phylogenetic reconstruction,much of which stems from the pessimistic view, provocatively expressed by Patterson (1981), that little, if anything, can be learned from fossils, The vast amount and high potential of DNA sequence data recently available dwarfs the morphological data in general, and makes the paleontological data seem insignificant. Whereas such seemingly grim prospect for fossils did not appear to dampen the spirit of paleontologists, a few did elect to defend the value of fossils (particularly in taxa which have reasonably good fossil records). In addition to the celebrated case ofthe relevance of fossils in determination of the high level relationships of amniotes by Gauthier et al. (1988), Chang and Zhou (1991) demonstrated the relevance of two Chinese Devonian fossil forms (Youngolepis and Diabolepis) in tetrapod phylogeny and their influence to the outcome of phylogenetic analysis. Treated as equal to living taxa, the Chinese fossil fishes have a major impact on the topology of tetrapod relationships.The ability of fossils to alter phylogeny based on living taxa is significantly diminished, however, when the groups to be analyzed are relatively recent in origin and when many intermediate forms survive to the present time, This is demonstrated to be the case in living canids (subfamily Caninae),which has a history of 8-10 Ma and few of its genera became extinct. Recent studies by R. H. Tedford. B. E. Taylor, and myself suggest that fossil canids will generally fit into existing phylogeny inferred from living taxa without disturbing its main topology.Even in the case of canids, fossils do serve two important functions. One is the correct interpretation of homoplasies. Apparent synapomorphies inferred from living taxa alone can turn out to be independently derived when primitive fossil taxa are included in the analysis. The second function of fossil canids is their transitional positions in phylogeny, which breaks up seemingly long list of synapomorphies into smaller components or intermediate states. Although this latter function takes the appearance of weakening the support of each nodes (diluting the synapomorphies), it actually strengthens the overall phylogeny by displaying evidence of the actual sequence of character acquisition, thus further corroborating hypothesis about character transformations.Other selected topics of cladistics are discussed, such as the nature of parsimony analysis, the development of bootstrap analysis, and the total evidence method for combined data matrix from morphology and molecules.
