Objective:The in vitro antimicrobial activity of cetylpyridinium chloride was determined against 269 clinical isolates from caries disease,endodontitis,gingivitis,periodontitis and orofacial infection.Methods:Agar dilution method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing was used to determine MIC 50 ,MIC 90 and MIC R of cetylpyridinium chloride against oral clinical isolates.Results:The MIC R of cetylpridinium chloride on 204 anaerobes are 3 1~12 5 mg/L;The MIC 50 and MIC 90 of cetylpridinium chloride on Gram negative anaerobic bacilli are 3 1 mg/L and 3 1~6 2 mg/L respectively;The MIC 50 and MIC 90 of it on Streptoccus mutans are 6 2 mg/L and 12 5 mg/L respectively;The MIC 50 and MIC 90 of it on Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are 6 2 mg/L,6 2 mg/L and 12 5 mg/L,6 2 mg/L respectively;The MIC 50 MIC 90 and MIC R on Pseudomona aeruginosa are not less than 1 000 mg/L The concentration of bacteria inoculated to agar plate has a slight effect on MIC valuse.The MIC valuse rise slightly with rising of bacterial concentraion.Conclutions:Except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cetylpyridinium chloride has significant antibacterial effect on other 259 clinically isolated bacteria.The MIC valuse of cetylpyeidinium chloride on Streptococcus mutans,Actinomyces,Staphylococus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermideis are 12 5 mg/L (0 00125%) and 25 mg/L (0 0025%)respectively whlie the MIC values on Porphyromonas gingivilis, Prevotella intermedia,Prevotella melanigogenica,Prevotella oralis,Prevotella oris,Bacteroides spp. are 3 1 mg/L(0 00031%)and 6 2 mg/L(0 00062%)respectively.It can be concluded that cetylpyridinium chloride in an effective antibacteria agent for the treatment of oral clinical infections.
