By a comparative study of a famous Chinese essay "The sight of father's back"by Zhu Ziqing and its English version translated by Zhang Peiji.the paper argues that although the cohesive devices in both texts can be roughly subsumed under the same five categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). there is nevertheless a considerable difference in their distribution. Broadly speaking, Chinese makes more use of reiteration and ellipsis while in English reference and substitution are more common.
