With the exception of 2,3-dimcthyl phenyl N-methyl carbamate, the introduction of a substituent ortho to the ester linkage on the ring was more likely to decrease the toxicity to the mosquito larvae.No correlation between the insecticidal and anti-cholinesterase activities of all compounds tested could be observed.

    The present paper is a report of the study of the relationship between the inhibitionof true and pseudo-cholinesterases from fly-head sources and the symptoms of house-fliespoisoned by organic phosphorus insecticides, Dipterex, Dimethoate and O,O-diethyl-2-(2-oxo-2-ureidoethyl) dithiophosp The enzymatic inhibition as well as the symptomsof organic phosphate poisoning was compared with phenyl N-methyl carbamate, anothergroup of anticholinesterase poison. The results revealed that the relationship betweenenzymatic inhibition and symptoms of poisoning is closely correlated. The degree of in-hibition of true-ChE is higher as compared with that of pseudo-ChE. This mightbe due to the extent of phosphorylation of true-ChE being greater than that ofpseudo-ChE. After the application of the insecticide, the maximum inhibition of bothcholinesterases appears simultaneously and always coincides with the time at which thepoisoned insects become paralysed. The time to reach the maximum inhibition of bothcholinesterases varies with different insecticides applied. The inhibited esterases regain their reactivity after certain period in vivo, and thetime of recovery varies with different insecticides applied, the reappearance of reactivitycould be explained by the formation of newly formed enzyme or the regeneration ofphosphorylated enzyme by hydrolysis. The enzyme inhibition in vitro of the compounds used was also tested, the resultsare in good agreement with the corresponding data in vivo under the same conditions.
