An unusual isolate from watercress (Nasturtium officinale) mottle,in association withturnip mosaic and cucumber mosaic viruses,produced small white local necrotic lesions on sapinoculated leaves of Nicotiana tabacum,N.rustica,N.glutinosa,Datura stramonium,Solanumnigra,Brassica pekinensis,B.chinensis,B.campestris,Raphanus sativa,Nasturtium officinale,Spinacia oleracea and Amaranthus mangostanus while small brown local necrotic lesions onGomphrena globosa,Phaseolus vulgaris (Pinto),Dolichos lablab,Vigna sinensis and Vicia faba.On R.sativa,in one occasion,two months,after the appearance of local lesions on inoculatedleaves,a systemic light and dark green mottling was noticed on the new growth.This“Raphanus mottle”was found to be a complex of a systemic turnip mosaic virus and a localwhite spot virus.The white spot entity could be isolated by inoculation of Datura stramoniumand B.Pekinensis,while the disease complex could be transmitted to N.glutinosa,B.chinensisand N.officinale.A similar case was found in N.tabacum,systemic mottle appeared on some plants follow-ing the local lesions;and this“tobacco mottle”was also proved to be due to a complex ofsystemic cucumber mosaic virus ad a local white spot virus.The authors suggest that these two cases might illustrate the phenomenon of a systemicvirus carrying along with a local virus in a latent state or in some unknown manner,whichmight be the situation of the white spot in watercress in nature.Zinnia elegans was found to be the systemic host of the white spot virus.The systemicsymptom was mild chlorosis or mild mottle.Occasionally,inoculations made from Zinnia ontoB.Pekinensis resulted in curl leaf of new growth,following white local lesions on the inoculatedleaves;whether this is a case of induced modification of virus in Zinnia is still under investiga-tion.The white spot virus seems non-tranmissible by peach aphids.Thermal inactivation pointis around 48-50℃;dilution end point rather inconsistent,sometimes 1000-5000 or 20000-30000;longevity of the leaf extract being 14 days in winter,but 1-2 days in summer,virus in driedleaves about 4 months in winter.

The virus was purified by means of chloroform clarification, polyethyleneglycol precipitation and differential centrifugation. The virion is flexuousabout 725nm in length. The sedimentation coefficient (S20. W) is 173S. Pin-wheel inclusions were observed in the cytoplasm of infected Nicotiana gluti-nosa leaf cells indicating that PMV is a member of the potato virus Ygroup.
