Data were collected on individual plants to estimate the correlation and path-coefficient between the grain yield per plant and the selected traits relating to yield. Phenotypie and genetic correlation coefficients were calculated from variance analysis and eovariance anaiysis of all possible combinations of characters.The number of kernels per spike had a high positive genetic correlation to the grain yield per plant.High negative phenotypie and genetic associations were observed between the kernel weight and the tiller number.Path coefficient analysis at the genetic level indicated that the negative direct effect of the kernel weight on the grain yield was large while the direct effect of the number of kernels per spike was intermediate. The tiller number and the kernel weight had a great influence, both direct and indirect, upon the seed yield per plant.Considering the results from the correlation and path-coefficient analysis, it may be concluded that in order to improve the grian yield per plant direct selectionbased on the number of kernels per spike should be more effective than on any of the other traits. Because of the negative correlation between the tiller number and the kernel weight, selection should be based on a compromise between the two traits, if maximum seed yield is expected.

The plant character, fertility rate and chromosome of 49 B1F2 and 8 B2F1 hybrid plants between wheat variety Chinese spring ( 2n = 6x = 42 ) and H. bulbosum ( 2n = 6x = 28 ) were studied.Some segregations were observed in plant type, tiller number, leaf shape, types of both spike and awn as well as fertility rate of 49 hybrid plants in generation B1F2. There were loose and dense spikes, curved and straight awns and erect and bent flag leaves. Tiller numbers of the plants were between 0-35, while fertility rate varied from 0-20%. The number of chromosomes was 48-56 ( 24-28 pairing disomes ) in most pollen mother cells of B1F2 at diakinesis or metaphase Ⅰ. It indicated that in generation B1F2 not only all the genomes of Chinese spring were present, but the pairing disomes of bulbosum chromosomes were retained also. Hence there is high hope of obtaining an alien-addition line of wheat through several generations of selfing and backcrossing.The spike types of 8 plants of B2F1 hybrid ( B1F1 X Chinese spring 5B ) were similar to those of the female parent. The fertility rates were between 8.33-39.12%. The number of chromosomes was between 42-52, with 46 chromosomes in the majority.
