Basing upon the general buckling theory of bars with thin-walled open sections, the lateral buckling equation of bulkhead stiffeners is derived in this paper. Using the Galerkin's method, a solution of the lateral buckling problem of bulkhead stiffeners simply-supported under the triangular distributed load is obtained. Using the same method in C 1 X some formulae and diagram have been derived for predicting the critical load of lateral buckling of horizontal girder or stiffeners of bulkheads, which can be applied to the bulkhead strength analysis of oil tanks or deep tanks in general cargo ships.
