Abstract The construction of modern literary theory with Chinese characteristics cannot avoid its own past and present conditions. Tradition, as it were, is not necessarily “classic” and does not merely mean confucianism, and both essence and dross are contained in it. To carry on and even go beyond tradition requires an scientific and creative explanation of the classical texts along with drawing on the new experiences from modern practice in the field of literature and arts.

有中国特色的现代文艺学必须建立在继承与发展中国文化传统的基础上。但传统有精华有糟粕,传统不等于“古典”,也不等于“儒家”。不超越传统,不可能有中国文艺学的现代形态和历史发展,这需要对古代文论的文本作科学的创造性诠释,要总结文艺实践的新鲜经验

The author of this article contends that qiyun, 'literary flavour' , is an important category of Chinese aestheticism and psychology of literature and art, and in comparison with its Western counterpart, it has its distinctive traits. The article makes a systematic analysis of the classical Chinese literary qiyun, putting special stress on its origin and development, and on the basis of this analysis, puts forth the proposition that qiyun is no more than a sort of "dynamic lasting charm".
