This paper describes the basic principle of a circuit to improvethe resolution and stability of a capacitance measuring system. A practical schemeto reduce stray capacitance and non-linearity which naturely exist in most capaci-tance transducers is given. The circuit consists of a pulse width modulator, cabledriver, non-linearity corrector and filter. In nonhostile environments the capacitan-ce transducer can be assembled with the measuring circuit closely. In this case,it is unnecessary to use the cable driver. When transducer is used in a hostileenvironment, such as with high temperature or corrosive gas, the measuring circuithas to be separated from the transducer. Then, the effect of stray capacitance canbe eliminated with a unit-gain amplifier that produces equipotential transmission ofthe signal. The non-linearity of transducer can be reduced by making the powersupply voltage a function of the output voltage. Testing of the prototype showedthat, when the transducer is connected with the measuring circuit through a doubleshielded 3m cable, the measuring system has a resolution of 0.005pf, an accuracybetter than 0.1%, and the variation of the output caused by cable motion isless than 0.2%. Also, when the system is associated with a high-temperature dynamicpressure transducer, even if the non-linearity of the transducer is 10%, the systemnon-linearity of about 1% can be obtained by adjusting parameters of the non-linearity corrector.
