This paper presents the experimental research work on a highly effective bilge-oily-water separator. According to the principles of the gravity separating and coalescing methods, three different types of mechanicalgravity separating structures and nine coalescing elements of different materials were chosen for experiment, from which the mechanical gravity separating structure of small corrugation plates laminated crest to hollow and best material and structural parameters for tne coalescing element were determind. Based on the experimental results, a prototype of gravitycoalescer separator was developed, and tests in laboratory, as well as trials on board were carried out in accordance with the testing rules for oily water separating eguipments and oil content meters recommended by IMCO resolution A 393 (X). The result shows that the coalescing material is characterized as to get fine oil content of bilge water to less than 10ppm effectively, the integration of the coalescer and the mechanical gravity separator as a pretreatment unit, features stable efficiency and long service life of the coalescing element in treating oily bilge water of complex composition, containing a certain amount of solid suspension as well.
