Modern sea floor hydrothermal mineralization is an important and new frontier in modern geosciences. This paper reviews the history, current situation and future of the studies on modern seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. There are two important advances in this field. One is the continual discovery of seafloor active and dead hydrothermal fields and massive sulfide deposits in different seafloor settings, such as mid oceanic ridges, island arc, back arc spreading center and within plate volcanism center...

Modern sea floor hydrothermal mineralization is an important and new frontier in modern geosciences. This paper reviews the history, current situation and future of the studies on modern seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. There are two important advances in this field. One is the continual discovery of seafloor active and dead hydrothermal fields and massive sulfide deposits in different seafloor settings, such as mid oceanic ridges, island arc, back arc spreading center and within plate volcanism center etc.. In mid oceanic ridges free from sediments, sulfide ore deposits are small and rich in Cu Zn, whereas along mid oceanic ridges covered by sediments, sulfide deposits are large and rich in Pb Zn. In the back arc basin and/or intra arc rifts, a complete spectrum from Pb Zn and Zn Pb Cu to Cu Zn ore deposits is developed in the trough and depression. Although the hydrothermal mineralization occurs in the island arc and within plate environments, sulfide deposits with industrial significance have not yet been found. Another advance is that the observation and investigation of seafloor hydrothermal processes and mineralization provide invaluable information for understanding the origin of ancient VMS deposits. The new concepts on metallogeny emphasize:(1)The seafloor hydrothermal mineralization processes are related to rifting and subsidence events.(2)Ore forming metals come from host volcano sedimentary rocks and underlying basement through which hydrothermal fluid circulated.(3)Sulfide accumulation occurs under a solid crust consisting of chimney fragments and sulfide mounds, by filling of sulfides into openning space and replacing of high temperature fluid into low temperature sulfide minerals.(4)The hydrothermal fluid constitutes a double diffusive convection system. Future investigation will be extensive and intensive. Extensive investigation will determine the distribution of hydrothermal mineralization in different environments. Intensive investigation will probe more deeply into the deposits and into the hydrothermal systems rooted in crust and upper mantle using geophysical methods as well as drilling.

Through combined investigations by using various methods and approaches such as deep sea drilling,high-temperature and high-pressure techniques and geophysical approaches,some new understandings and important advances have been made in the field of Earth's science including the composition of Earth's core-mantle; the origin of CO2,global change and its relation with mineralization;the evolution of the lithosphere and oxygen-in sufficient events;mass extinction,sea floor spreading and its correlation with mineralization,etcAlso described in this paper are the new advances in the study of the mineralization of super large ore deposits and the mechanism of disperse element mineralization. It has been proposed that in both South and Southwest China great attention shou1d be paid to the Jinningian and Himalayan metallogenesis.

90年代,国内外地学工作者将现代科学的新方法、新技术应用于地球科学研究中,通过深海钻探、高温高压技术与地球物理手段等多种方法综合研究,致使在:地球的核-幔组分;CO2的起源、全球变化及其与成矿的关系;岩石圈的演化与缺氧事件、生物灭绝、海底扩张及成矿的相关性等诸多固体地球科学研究领域,均取得了若干最新的认识和重要进展。本文还对超大型矿床及分散元素成矿机制等的研究新进展分别作了阐述,并提出在华南和西南地区要重视晋宁期和喜山期成矿作用的研究。
