Adoption of the international method of dry-heat accelerating aging (ISO 5630/1-1982) for these papers proved to be feasible. It was suggested that parameters chosen for evaluating aging properties should be well related to the end use of the paper and its quality. Measurements of folding endurance, internal tearing resistance, brightness, and copper number or average degree of polymerization were strongly recommended for papers before and after accelerating aging.

Cationic starch has been used as wet-end additives in papermaking for many years, claiming to improve retention, drainage, and sheet properties. The mechanism and enhancements in strength properties of cationic starch added to the paperboard made from straw and bamboo pulps are being investigated. The adsorption and retention of cationic starch on fibers are studied. The mechanism by which cationic starch causes strength development in paper is presented. It is found that cationic starch is effective in improving strength properties of paperboards. This includes Z-direction strength, ring crush, bursting and folding endurance. While cationic starch does not detectably promote fiber strength, it does favor fiber bonding by increasing the bonding areas of the component fibers, thus enhancing the ability to create hydrogen bonds. Cationic starch can create new bonding sites on fiber surfaces different from conventional hydrogen bond. These new bonds are not the sole factor that improves the fiber bonding strength. Experimental results also show that less than 2% cationic starch is first selectively retained at the reactive areas of the fiber. These reactive areas are the -COO~- groups of fiber surface exposed during the pulping process. The new bonds that cationic starch create on fiber surfaces are directly concerned with the -COO~- groups of the fiber surfaces.
