    Growers in Kansu Province employed sand as mulch in the production of early gourds and other vegetable traditionally. In the present study, the authors applied this valuable experi-ence in conducting experiments on the growth and performance of vegetable seedlings in Hosi, Kansu, in 1958, and the results were summarized as follows:

    在甘肃“砂田”对瓜类和菜类的早熟、稳产与增产功效很大。本文对苗床铺砂后土壤温度与土壤含盐量的变化及作物苗期生育状况作了较深入的研究,证明苗床铺砂与大田铺砂具有同等的功效,可以在我国高寒地带示范推广。

    Garlic is a vegetable crop with shallow roots. The number and growth rate of the roots aftering planting was found to be related to the old stem-plate, tissues and the dry scales of the cloves being peeled or not. When the dry scales and the stem plate tissues were peeled, the number and the growth rate of the roots would greatly increase.

    本文系作者在1962年对著名品种紫皮蒜和狗牙蒜形态发育的初步研究桔果。文中指出大蒜生长过程可分为萌发期、幼苗期、鳞芽与花芽分化期、蒜办与蒜苔成长期和休眠期等五个时期;根系萌发的数量和速度与剥皮去踵有关。叶片的全部展出期和生长高峰因品种而不同。大蒜种办的消失、鳞芽和花芽的分化是大蒜生理过程的关键;紫皮蒜的种办消失可做为其鳞芽和花芽分化期的标志。

    Our materials for observation of varieties of vegetable Amaranthus include 28 specimens, received in two batches from twelve provinces of our country ranging from north to south. Except those sent in by Kweichow province, which did not grow into plants due to failure in germination, all seeds of other provinces have undergone examination in period of flowering, and most of them even bear ripe seeds. These cultivated Amaranthus seeds, through two years sowing, growing and obs- ervation, produce two species:...

    Our materials for observation of varieties of vegetable Amaranthus include 28 specimens, received in two batches from twelve provinces of our country ranging from north to south. Except those sent in by Kweichow province, which did not grow into plants due to failure in germination, all seeds of other provinces have undergone examination in period of flowering, and most of them even bear ripe seeds. These cultivated Amaranthus seeds, through two years sowing, growing and obs- ervation, produce two species: Sien Tsai (Amaranthus gangeticns L.) and the white- seeded Sien Tsai (A. paniculatus L.). Later by method of Selection, discarding and annexation altogether 20 varieties are obtained, among which 18 varieties belong to ordinary Sien Tsai, while only two varieties are white-seeded Sien Tsai. The basis of classification: the species are classified mainly by charaeter of inflo- rescence and structure of flower organ, while the varisties are chiefly by date of blooming, and subsidiarily by shape and hue of leaves and else. As to usage, the white-seeded Amaranfhus, with a limited area of distribution, is occasionally adopted as vegetable only in Nanking. Therefore the author is of the opinion that, at present the majority of Amarantnus as oultivated in various localilies of our country belong to Amaranthus gangeticus L. The specimen supplied by the Shangtong Agriculture College, during studying of species of Amaranthus in 1961 was given name as A. gangeticus Variety variagated leafed, but during observation in 1962 was unfortunately overlooked, so when the art- icle was being prepared, this variety did not enter into the key, this may be regar- ded as a defect in our work. The name Sien Tsai (vegetable Amarantnus) as called in different places (in some cases it is ealled vurgarly as Red Sien Tsai, Red round-leafed Sien Tsai, Big round -leafed red Sien Tsai, Red leafed Sien Tsai, etc.) is generally referred to Amaranthus purple-leafed and with green border, while the genuine red Sieu Tsai, the leaves of whieh from seedling stage till growing old are wholly in purple, has nevertheless not been given the name of Red Sien Tsai, for this reason, the author has made slight revision in nomenclature of varieties, and appended the original vulgar names for reference.

    苋菜品种分类是在一九六一年研究我国苋菜种类的基础上继续下来的。样品是由我国南北十二省征集而来,以江苏为最多。研究主要根据花序的形状色泽,开花期的迟早,而以叶子形状色泽为辅;共得20品种。它们分属于苋菜(Amaranthus gangeticus L.)及白籽苋菜(Amaranthus paniculatus L.)两种,前者占18品种,后者仅2品种。以日前供蔬菜食用来说,苋菜的各品种分布在我国各省,白籽苋菜只在南京偶然看到。
