The much discussed and controversial problem1) of ultrasonic absorption in ethyl and methyl acetates has been further investigated experimentally by the method of optical diffraction2) in progressive ultrasonic waves. In designing the equipment and throughout the measurement, special cares have been taken for the plane progressive nature of the ultrasonic field in the liquid trough, the elimination of stray light effect so that the receiver (a photomultiplier with preamplifier and a frequency analyzer connected...

The much discussed and controversial problem1) of ultrasonic absorption in ethyl and methyl acetates has been further investigated experimentally by the method of optical diffraction2) in progressive ultrasonic waves. In designing the equipment and throughout the measurement, special cares have been taken for the plane progressive nature of the ultrasonic field in the liquid trough, the elimination of stray light effect so that the receiver (a photomultiplier with preamplifier and a frequency analyzer connected in series) could respond with precision the relative light intensity of the first diffracted maxima at different stations along the ultrasonic beam, etc. Automatic recordings of sound absorption coefficients were made possible by the sound level recorder synchronized with the motion of the liquid trough. Several standard liquids have been tested; the absorption coefficients thus obtained agree well with commonly accepted values.

If one side of the thalamus was sucked off and the callosal connection kept intact, no matter which side of the cortex was stimulated, the repetitive responses could only be recorded from the side of the cortex with the thalamus intact. It appears that the generation of such repetitive responses is a result of the activation of some neuronic circuits involving the cerebral cortex and the thalamus by impulses coming through the corpus callosum or the bilateral connections of the thalamus.

A number of plots of a summer-sown field corn variety was artificially infested withvarying numbers of corn-borer egg masses at late silking stage,to synchronize with thenatural egg laying peak.Larvae coming out from these eggs fed at a stage of the cornfrom the late silking till the harvesting of the crop.Regression methods were used to estimatethe effect of borers on the yield on the basis of the average numbers of borers per plant andthe yield in catties per hundred plants from each plot.Yield loss was found to be directly proportional to the number of corn borers present anda linear relationship existed thereof.Based upon the regression equation,the rate of yieldreductions in catties per hundred plants for each unit increase jn borer per plant was calculated.The mean yield reduction of a hundred plants per borer per plant was found to be 0.17 catties.Expressed in percentage,the rate of yield reduction per borer per plant was 0.89 per cent.With an average yield of 450 catties per mow,the actual of yield loss owing to the borerinfestation will be only 4 catties at the one borer per plant level insofor as the infestationwas made at the said development stage of the corn.The insignificant effect of the borers onthe yield is probably attributable to the fact that infestation comes up at a later season withrespect to the plant growth.The present results indicate the need for further studies of theeffect of borers on the yield at different growing stage of the corn.

以人工接卵方法研究夏玉米小黄品种乳熟到完熟阶段玉米螟幼虫数量与产量的相关,得知虫口密度与产量损失呈直线相关。单株每增加幼虫1头,百株产量损失0.17斤,损失百分率为0.89%,影响极小。如按每亩2300株计,在上述玉米生育阶段内无虫时的产量436斤,单株平均有虫1头时,每亩损失约4斤。作者初步认为:北京地区夏玉米使用颗粒剂一次防治螟害,在玉米较早生育期(如心叶末期或开花授粉期)施药,效果应优于在卵高峯前后施药。
