However, there has been debate over the understanding and translation of this Western term among scholars. Anthony D. Smith, a sociologist teaching at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, has published many books and articles on the concept of “nation” and his opinions have been very influential among Western scholars. In his book National Identity published in 1991, Smith discussed the historical process of this concept and the problems in its application. The author introduces Smiths views, and provides insights into this concept. The author makes further discussion based on his own research experiences and suggests translations for several key terms for future discussion.

This paper deems that ethno-separatism is the extreme outcome of ethno-nationalism and is related naturally to violent terrorism. This paper deems that ethno-separatism is the extreme outcome of ethno-nationalism and is related naturally to violent terrorism. Ethno-separatism in the contemporary era resulted from the misreading of the concept of nation-state and the misuse of the right to national self-determination. The paper makes a classification of the ethno-separatism that takes part in violent terrorism, and then reveals the historical background and realistic causes that resulted in the ethno-separatism. The author also points out that the terrorist organization, making use of the ethnic and religious contradictions and the common people's emotion, takes part in terrorist activities with the purpose to maintain its "authoritative status" based on extremism and atrocity and its capacity to manipulate the mass. For this reason, the terrorist organization with a particular racial, ethnic or religious background is not to be regarded as the representative of the whole group concerned. Otherwise, the result could only be the strengthening of the terrorist force's mass foundation and the encouragement its rampancy, thus covering up its extreme anti-human essence.
