There were two representative opinions about the nature of light in ancient China. Some believed light was a kind of gas released from light source. Others represented by the 17th century scientist Fang Yizhi regarded light as the spread of the interaction of air. From that view, a primitive theory of light wave was developed. About the transmitting range of light, the ancient people thought light could only transmit in limited distance. They often used the theory to discuss astronomical problems. Since they hadono idea of “action at a distance” in ancient China, Chinese people thought it took light time to transmit and it traveled at a high speech. In which way does the light speach? The ancient Chinese believed that when travelling short distance, light traveled rectilinearly; and when travelling long distance with certain conditions, light traveled in curve. That theory reached its top when Fang Yizhi raised the concept that “light is fat and shadow is thin”, which is corresponding to his theory of light wave.
