Objective.With the aims of simplification adaptation and making better option conveniently in mechanism design procedure,an attempt has been made to develop a technique using precision point method with which the different four-bar linkages are synthesized in a unified way.This paper shows that the technique results from regarding a four-bar linkage as a combination of two tri-bar chains both may be the same or different.Tri-bar chains are divided into two types here.One,as named the first type(see Fig.2),is expressed as the equation in terms of XA,yA,a,e and a,where the position of floating link BM is defined by a line MN.The another,as named the second type(see Fig.3),is expressed as the equation in terms of xA,yA,a,e and β,where the position of crank AB is defined by a line AP.These two equations obviously contain the interchangeable parameters and are the same in expressive form.It is not a difficult problem to solve these equationse because they are both the simple determinants or algebraic equations below quartric.Solving method for the first type has been derived in detail and that for the second type is in the same way or through a common subroutine when using a cmputer to solve them.As the particular cases,simpler solutions are given that all the given points(five or four)on floating link to be synthesized are just on a circle or a line.The problem of synthesizing a planar four-bar linkage,therefore becomes to give the solutions to all the possible equations of tri-bar chains satisfying with the assigned conditions and to choose two from them proper for design requirements (e.g.,link length ratio and transmission index) in order to combine these two into one----the desired four-bar linkage (as Fig.4).Explanations are given for such four-bar linkages as the mechanisms for guiding a rigid boody,for generating a given function and for generating a designated path.Solution to a crane mechanism design is exemplified to explain the synthesis of a planar four-bar linkage for generating a designated path.
