In every work cycle,the first injection offers the fuel to form a lean homogeneous mixture in the whole cylinder,and the second injection to produce a rich mixture near the spark plug. Some fundamental experiments are carried out on a 5-valve S. I. engine CA1102Q modified by ourselves. The results prove that this novel fuel injection mode can extend the engine' s lean burn ability larger by 2 unit of air-fuel ratio than the popular fuel injection mode for lean combustion,and reduce the fuel consumption remarkably.

In this experimental study, we redesigned the intake system of a Xiali TJ376Q gasoline engine so that its intake swirl and tumble motions were highly intensified. The stronger air motions are helpful in organizing mixture strength distribution and then realizing lean mixture combustion in two valve gasoline engines. The previous carburetor type fuel supply system was replaced by intake port electronic fuel injection system and the technique of TEFI (Twice Electronic Fuel Injection per cycle) is employed. Through regulations of the timings and quantity of two injections, an adequate charge stratification was produced (we call it quasi-homogenous mixture) and the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were improved and the lean burn was successfully realized in a production 2-valve SI engine.

Feasibility of compression natural gas direct injection (CNG DI) stratified combustion is investigated by using a rapid compression machine.Results show that CNG DI stratified combustion has the short initial flame development duration and main burning duration and high pressure rise due to combustion caused by the charge stratification.Stratified combustion can extend the lean combustion limit to very lean region.CO increases steeply with the increase in equivalence ratio φ when φ is larger than 0.8 due to the excessive stratification and NO x peak value shifts to the region of low φ due to charge stratification.Combustion efficiency maintains more than 0.92 in the range of φ from 0.1 to 0.9 and it deteriorates at very low φ due to bulk quenching and at large φ due to excessive stratification.The combustion efficiency calculated from combustion products shows good agreement with that obtained from the heat release analysis.Thus CNG DI is considered to have much potential in a spark ignition engine on the basis of wide operation range of φ and high energy conversion efficiency.
