Considering the channel reaches dowstream a reservior as a subsystem under the whole river system and by using the conception of complex response in systems, the author has made an attempt to reveal the channel adjuatment process downstream a reservior through river model experiment.The author introduced the following indice to describe the property of this subsystem: 1) the bank resistance index: K_w=M_w/0.76γHJ; 2) the bed resistance index: K_b=D/γHJ; 3) the relative resistance index:K_r=M_w /(D.m); 4) the pointbar resistance index: K_p=M_p/τ; 5)river bed gradient J; 6) the width to depth ratio B~(1/2)/H; 7) the channel sinuosity coefficient; where M_w and M_p are the percentage of clay-silt content in bank and pointbar material, respectively, D the medium grain diameter of bed material, H the flow depth, m the bank slope coefficient, τ the flowing water shear stress to the surface of pointbar, γ the specific gravity of water In estsblishing all these 4 resistance indice, the author took the influence of flowing water shear stress to boundary material into account in order to make the physical meaning of these indice clearer.The construction of a reservior changes remarkably the input of the subsystem downstream the reservior and results in a series of adjustments to adopt the subsystem to the changed input. The complex response occurs, which can be seen clearly by ploting the changes of values of the above- mentioned indice describing the property of the subsystem with time(see Fig. 1).After the bed scouring caused by clean water begun, the subsystem responses to the changed input by means of decreasing the width to depth ratio B~(1/2)/H, flattening bed gradient J, and increasing channel sinuosity. However, with the coarsening of bed material grains and the change of hydaulic condition in scouring process, the resistance of river boundary material also changes, including an increase in K_b value and a decrease in K_r value. The feedback of these changes into bed form adjustment process reduces the bed cutting-down rate and strengthens the bank erosion which causing the bed width increase. Therefore, the decrease rate of B~(1/2)/H value becomes slower and slower and at a critical point the B~(1/2) /H value starts to increase. The river plane form adjustment is similar to what was mentioned above. Because the clean water from the reservior carries very little sediment, the cohesive material content in the pointbar formed newly by the lateral migration of the bending river becomes less and less,resulting a decrease in its resistance to flowing water. The pointbar could be cut by flowing water more easily. This restrains the progressive increase of sinuosity coefficient r, and eventually r becomes from increase to decrease after getting a maximum value.Based on the data from this experimental study, the author has established a conceptual model which can be used to describe the complex response in the channel process dowstream a reservior (see Fig.2).This model divides the whole process into three stages:Stage Ⅰ Because of the change of input condition, both B~(1/2)/H and J decrease, and r increases.Stage Ⅱ Because of the feedback of changed bounbary condition, B~(1/2)/H goes from decrease to increase, r from increase to decrease, and the decrease rate of J becomes very slow.Stage Ⅲ The eqilibrium is reached once more. B~(1/2)/H, r and J are equal to constant approximately, and the subsystem restores stability.
