The major feature of this new kinetic model for H factor prediction was distinguished by the fact that the active alkali concentration adopted did not depend either on its initial concentration co or the concentration at any fixed period of time. Instead, the active alkali concentration of the sample taken at one-half of the arithmatic mean of H factor control (H/2) obtained through a number of mill operations was employed.It was realized that pectic substances, resinuous matters, starches and other minor constituents in wood as well as moisture tended to bring about significant decreases in the initial alkali concentration. Furthermore deflection point was conspicuously found in the experimental curves presented in this paper. This led to an asumption that the activation energies consumed were not the same for removing lig-nin from the lamella and from within the cell wall. Theoretically, a kraft digestion was supposed to proceed in three stages. However, to minimize external interferences, a two-stage control should be adopted. This would help to minimize cellulose degradation, to preserve cellulose D.P. and to promote pulp yield.
