A series of wedge shaped castings were produced from a number of cast iron compositions and treatments, and prepared for study of their graphite morphology using both optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A series of wedge shaped castings were produced from a number of cast iron compositions and treatments, and prepared for study of their graphite morphology using both optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM samples were deep etched to remove the matrix structure so that the three dimensional form of the graphite could be related to the varying solidification cooling rate encountered within the wedge casting. It was observed that changes from one recognized graphite form to another occur by a gradual change in the graphite morphology, and do not occur in an interrupted manner which would be characteristic of unique nucleation events required for each graphite form. Transitions between a number of graphite forms have been studied, including: Type A flake to undercooled Type D flake, undercooled to coral, coral to compacted, compacted to deteriorated spheroidal, and deteriorated spheroidal (including chunky graphite) to spheroidal. Compacted graphite was observed to be interconnected within eutectic cells (similar to flake graphite), however, the growth characteristics of compacted graphite were found to be similar to that of spheroidal graphite (growth along the C axis of the graphite crystalline structure). The relationship between chunky and spheroidal graphite was also observed. Chunky graphite was classified as one of the deteriorated forms of spheroidal graphite, with the chunky graphite being interconnected and with the dominant growth direction being along the C axis.
