Rating scales are of special importance in writing assessment.Different scoring methods will exert different influence on the scores test takers receive from the raters.Research results indicate that both holistic and analytic scoring methods were reliable,but there were great changes in the raters' severity estimates and the scores the candidates received across the two kinds of ratings.Generally speaking,raters produced more uniform ratings and they were neither severe nor lenient to the candidates when they employed the holistic scoring method;while in the analytic ratings,candidates,on the whole,received higher grades,meanwhile,the raters differed significantly in their severity.Hence,we can come to the conclusion that the holistic scoring method is preferable over the analytic one in high-stakes assessment.
