The growth curve of weathering thickness has been determined by using age control from radio carbon, thermolumi-nesecence and ESR techniques, showing the exponential decay of weathering rate. Weathering-rind thickness thus provives a measure of the age of deposits or geomorphic surfaces:T = 1485D4.13Where T=age in years, and D = weighted mean thickness in mm of about 50 gravels from the surficial part of deposit.Using this method, the authors have determined the ages of two types of geomorphic surfaces in Guangdong area. The ages of the first and second river terraces are determined as 1 000-13300 yrs, and 8600-26500 yrs., respectively; while those of the first-and second-order alluvial fans along the northern front of Zhaoqing basin as 51500 and 24400 yrs., respectively. Based on these data and geomorphic analysis of tectonic deformation, the rates of vertical faulting for three major NE-trending fault zones in the area can be estimated as 0.6-1.6mm/yr. for the period before mid-Holocene, and much less value for Latest Pleistocene.

Activity and neotectonics of the Shenzhen fault zone in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Guangdong Province, has been discussed on the basis of geomorphic features and Quaternary sediments, as follows:1. There is a series of the smaller intermontane basins and valleys, with axis orientation of NE-SW or ENE-WSW same as trending of the major faults within the fault zone. Most of these basins and valleys, in which the colluvium, alluvium and swamp deposits, with a total thickness of less than 10-15m, were accumulated during the period from the middle of the Late Pleistocene to the middle of the Holocene, are located in the older fracture and or the limistone strata undergoing karstification strongly. Their distribution, hence, might be related to the faulting processes before the Late Pleistocene. However, any fault and marked deformation in the sediments of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene has not been observed. It may be suggested that no remarkably faulting has occurred in the fault zone at least since the middle of the Late Pleistocene.2. Four paleo-denudation surfaces and three alluvium tarraces have been developed in the fault zone since about 1.8 Ma. The vertical deformation rates of crust uplift relative to the regional erosion basis could be estimated as 0.04-0.2mm/a for different ages, based upon the elevations and duration estimates of the geomorphic surfaces formed in different stage. The Quaternary tectonic movement would be characcterized by pulse uplift and depression of the crust for the Shenzhen fault zone.

The planation surface deveioped during the Neogene before 2. 4 Ma B. P. according to the mammal fossils buried in the relative deposit and dating of overlying loess. The denudation surface was formed during the initial Quaternary from 2. 4 Ma B. P. to 1. 8 Ma B. P. on the basis of the ages of downlying stratum annd overlain loess. Based on the studies of loess magnetic stratigraphy and paleosol sequence on terraces, seven terraces of the Yellow River were formed because of stream downcuttings which respectively began at 1300, 1100, 780, 590,140, 50 and 10 ka B. P. from older to younger. The reason for stream downcuttings is pulsating tectonic uplifts. Based on the above researches, a physiographic stage is defined as a period in which a geomorphic surface was formed. This stage and its following short period in which stream downcutting or landforms destruction happened because of tectonic uplift compose a physiographic cycle. The end time of each physiographic stage has been given out according to age of geomorphic surface. There are at least nine physiographic cycles in the middle reaches of the Yellow River during the Late Cenozoic Era.

上起积石峡下至三门峡的黄河中游地区在晚新生代期间发育了一级夷平面、一级剥蚀面和七级河流阶地。夷平面形成于2.4Ma以前的晚第三纪,剥蚀面形成于2.4~1.8MaB.P的第四纪初期;黄河的七级阶地分别是开始于1300、1100、780、590、140、50、10kaB.P的河流下切形成的,其原因在于构造的脉动式上升。基于上述研究成果,我们将每一地貌面形成的时期定义为一个地文期,它与其后因构造运动造成的地形切割或河流下切构成一个地文期旋回。在晚新生代黄河中游至少存在九个地文期旋回。
