Some anomalous occurence on the copolymerisation kinetics between polystyrene macromer (M_1), prepared by the method of anionic polymerisation, and butyl acrylate (M_2) in solution with AIBN as initiator has been discovered. Curious to sary, it has been observed that over a wide range of conversions, either the overall rate of the copolymerisation or the individual copolymerisation rate of M_1 and M_2 were affected by the concentration very slightly, and, in addition, the increasing of molecular weight of the copolymer were changing progressively. These experimental facts can hardly be explained easily with the formal kinetic rules of free radical solution copolymerisation. In considering the viscosity of the given system, the morphology of the macromer itself and the nature of comb-copolymer in solution, the said unusual kinetic behavior could, most probably, be accounted for the diffusing effect occured.Based upon the peculiarity of macromer the cross-propagation rate between macromer and growing chain radical having butyl acrylate as its terminal freeradical-bearing unit was determined. The apparent monomer reactivity ratios were also measured (r_(1, app)=O, r_(2, app)=0.27±0.04) and discussed inherently. Moreover, by considering both diffusion and kinetic effect on propagating step simultaneously, the new composition equations of copolymer and expressions of apparent m. r. r. have been derived.

The composite material polyacid-glass powder proves to have good properties, adapted for use in dentistry and orthopedics. We have prepared many different polyacids, studied factors affecting the properties of these materials, and evaluated the property of water resistance and X-ray penetration of these materials. The preferred polyacids arc those prepared by the copolymerisation of acrylic acid, itaco- onic acid, and vinyl acetate. The mole ratio of these monomers is 6:3:1.
