Seismological science is not only a multilateral frontier science,but also a“cross-discipline”,intercros- sing natural sciences and social sciences.The book“Earthquake Countermeasures”is an embodiment of this “cross-discipline”. Firstly,this paper gives a general description of the fundamental characteristics of the book“Earth- quake Countermeasures”:it is the first book on earthquake countermeasures in China,which systematically summarizes earthquake countermeasures.It takes earthquake prediction as the main lines;it stresses disaster relief;it cites examples of countermeasures in different areas and more comprehensively enumerates earth- quake countermeasures according to such characteristics as topography,landforms,humanities,economy, season and time of earthquake occurrences in the stricken areas.It draws materials from all sides,with substantial content and has universal reference value,suitable to all readers.It reflects socio-economic ben- eficial results,and can be expected to play a certain role in reducing disasters during periods of high ear- thquake activities in the future.The paper also points out the problems to be further pursued in the future, both in the theory and in the quantification of earthquake cduntermeasures.The paper points out the regula- tions and standards of earthquake countermeasures,that have to be further refined and summed up,and enriched with time variation.The countermeasures should he continuously complemented and revised in acco- rdance with the different characteristics of the periods of high and low earthquake activity so as to make them standardized. Finally,the paper points out that since earthquake prediction and preparedness are the core the entire earthquake countermeasures,six aspects should be paid attention to as follows:1.Seismic precursory ano- malies are macroscopic phenomena;2.Precursory fields are irregular “fields”distributed as scattered poin- ts;3.The seismic source is an“open system”which can both concentrate stress and rapidly release stress; 4.Comprehensive model analysis and mathematical analysis are two aspects of study which can complement but not replace each other;5.As recurrences are relative and variable,so seismic sources must be analysed comprehenssively from developing view points;6.Integration of parameters in seismometry with other pre- eursories can make them complement each other and help improve earthquake prediction.
